The unknown city of the Middle Kingdom is famous for the lowest temperatures in the country. The town is becoming an important element of domestic tourism.

Although we associate frosts above 50 degrees Celsius with remote areas of Russia, we can also find places famous for extremely low temperatures in other regions of the world. China also has its “North Pole”, returning to global tourism after a break due to restrictions introduced due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The northernmost city of Mohe welcomes an increasing number of tourists from southern China, and in the future it may also win the hearts of foreign visitors.

Mohe, inhabited by nearly 50,000 people, is located in Daxing'anling Prefecture in Heilongjiang Province. This is the coldest and snowiest area of ​​the Middle Kingdom, nearly 30 hours' drive from Beijing, located in northern China. Currently, thermometers in the city exceed 20 degrees of frost, which is not even close to the record. The lowest temperature in this town was measured in January 2023 and was -53 degrees Celsius. The city has China's first airport built on permafrost.

More and more Chinese tourists choose winter tourism

Mohe is becoming an important element of domestic tourism. The authors of the report by the Chinese television CGTN News indicate that every year the city is visited by an increasing number of southern Chinese. Increased demand for winter tourism and improved infrastructure may even encourage foreign tourists to visit in the coming years – and there is definitely something to see here. This is one of the few places in China where you can see the northern lights and reindeer. You can also find an ice and snow palace here or ride a snowmobile. The northernmost region attracts visitors by advertising its attractions as “extreme and unique experiences.”
