Polish tennis players faced Barbados in the Davis Cup. The stake of these struggles was advancement to next year’s play-off phase for a place in World Group I. The White and Reds showed a very good performance.

On September 15-16, Polish tennis players faced Barbados on a hard court at the training center of the Polish Tennis Association in Kozerki. The stake of this competition was advancement to next year’s play-off phase for a place in World Group I, in which the White and Reds lost to Japan 0-4 away in February.

Davis Cup: Victories of Hurkacz and Pieczkowski

After the first day of the Davis Cup competition, the Poles were leading 2-0 against Barbados. Hubert Hurkacz and Olaf Pieczkowski won their singles matches. – The beginning was comfortable for me, but towards the end my opponent started playing a little better. I also made a few simple mistakes, but everything turned out fine. I never underestimate my opponents, I prepare for each match in the same way – said Hurkacz, who defeated Kaipo Marshall 6-0, 7-5.

In the second match, Olaf Pieczkowski won 1:6, 7:6 (7-5), 6:3 after a two-and-a-half-hour fight. – I think that nothing has changed compared to last year’s performance. I went onto the court just as tense, just as stressed. The only thing that may have changed is the improvement in mentality, because in important moments I didn’t think about how badly I played or that I easily lost the first set to one – said Pieczkowski, quoted by PZT.

Davis Cup: A day later, the Poles finished the job

The competition resumed the next day (Saturday) at 11. And the doubles match was played first. Jan Zieliński and Karol Drzewiecki defeated Darian King and Haydn Lewis 6:4, 6:4.

The triumph over the Barbados team was sealed by Tomasz Berkieta, who defeated Xavier Lawrence 6:3, 6:4. After this victory, the fifth match was not played. A 4-0 win against Barbados allowed the Polish team to advance to next year’s play-offs for a place in World Group I.
