How much water should we drink daily? A dietitian debunks a popular myth

Water is one of the basic elements of a healthy diet. Virtually everyone knows this truth. However, not everyone realizes how much water we should drink a day. Most people have been wrong so far.

It is assumed that an adult should drink about 8 glasses of water a day, which gives a total of 2 liters. However, this amount – as Dr. Hanna Stolińska argues – is now a thing of the past. So how much water should be included in our diet? The answer to this question may surprise many people.

How much water should you drink daily?

The recommendation to drink eight glasses of water a day, or about 2 liters, has been modified. For men, the optimal amount is from 2.5 to 3.7 liters. Women, however, should drink from 2.5 to 2.7 l. Please note that these are general guidelines. “However, they change depending on age, health condition, physical activity and ambient temperature,” emphasizes Dr. Hanna Stolińska. It is also worth remembering that hydrating the body does not have to be limited only to drinking “clean” water. Consumption of vegetables and fruit – as noted by the dietitian – can cover up to one fifth of the daily water requirement.

Hydration of the body is essential

We should always remember to provide our body with adequate amounts of water, not only on hot and sunny days. Drinking too little fluid can have very serious consequences and lead to many unpleasant ailments. Headaches, dizziness, drowsiness, irritability and nausea occur. Over time, you may also notice other disturbing signals, for example:

  • kidney problems,

  • increased heart rate,

  • anxiety,

  • confusion,

  • convulsions.

Please remember that drinking too much water (over 6 liters per day) also poses a serious health risk. It leads to a significant burden on the excretory system and the so-called water intoxication. Swelling develops in various parts of the body. The organ most sensitive to excess fluid in the body is the brain.

What to drink to hydrate your body?

One of the most important fluids is water. However, if you don't like its taste, you can reach for teas, fruit juices, natural isotonic drinks or infusions of fruit and herbs. Adding flavor to plain water is also a good solution. You can use mint, lemon, grapefruit or lime juice for this purpose. It is worth remembering to choose good quality products. Avoid products artificially sweetened or enriched with chemical dyes, enhancers or preservatives.
