Diseases of the gums and other periodontal tissues increase the risk of serious diseases. Specialists warn that improper care of oral hygiene can have very serious consequences.

The health of your oral cavity is of great importance to the overall health of your body. Regular dental treatment and proper oral hygiene help prevent many diseases, including tooth decay, gingivitis and infections, but not limited to them. Many people do not realize that periodontal disease, if left untreated and persists for a long time, can lead to many truly serious diseases. Meanwhile, unfortunately, inflammation of the gums is a common disease among Poles.

What can gingivitis lead to?

When our gums are sick, our entire body is actually sick. Gingivitis can lead to periodontal disease and, consequently, tooth loss, but not only that. It also increases the risk of other diseases and dangerous chronic diseases. Periodontal disease affects our entire body. During it, immune cells throughout the body are activated. They can then migrate to other organs, such as the brain or kidneys, but not only that, and contribute to the development of pathological processes. As a result, they can also lead to many chronic inflammatory diseases, such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), but also neurodegenerative diseases (e.g. Alzheimer's disease). Additionally, they can also cause complications during pregnancy or childbirth.

Moreover, one of the studies conducted at the Institute of Dentistry of the Jagiellonian University shows that in people who have cured periodontal disease, there is a noticeable reduction in blood pressure (the best effects were observed in people under 58 years of age).

Oral hygiene is the key to health

It is therefore very important to prevent periodontal disease because it negatively affects our entire body. Prevention is important (but also easier and less time-consuming). The key is proper oral hygiene. Therefore, it is necessary to brush your teeth at least twice a day. It is also extremely important cleaning of interdental spaces using dental floss or a special toothbrush (and many people, unfortunately, skip this stage during their daily oral hygiene). Additionally, we should undergo treatment once every six months tartar removal, because it contributes to the development of periodontal diseases. For many people, a visit to the dentist is quite a significant drain on the household budget, so check how not to overpay for the dentist – you can really save a lot on dental treatment.
