iPhone overheating? Apple on smartphone temperatures

Phones can get quite hot during heavy use, and the iPhone is no exception. However, what is normal operation of the phone and what should cause us a little concern? Here’s what Apple says about the temperatures of its smartphones.

At the very beginning, the company emphasizes that iPhones and iPads are intended for use at temperatures from 0 degrees Celsius to 35 degrees C. Devices that are not actively used are slightly more resistant to weather conditions. Here, the creators argue that the iPhone will withstand temperatures ranging from -20 degrees C to 45 degrees C.

It is true that Apple phones can operate at temperatures both lower and higher than the recommended range. However, this can negatively impact them and change how the equipment works.

For example, exposing your smartphone to very high temperatures may result in a permanent reduction in battery life, the manufacturer warns. Excessive frost only means a temporary shortening of battery life, but it can also completely turn off our phone.

iPhone gets warm – sometimes that’s not a bad thing

There are several natural situations that can cause your iPhone to heat up. We shouldn’t worry too much about these – they are normal and after a period of intense operation (and an increase in temperature), the phone should return to its normal state by itself. Cases of this type include:

• Starting the device for the first time and setting up the system;

• Restoring your phone from a backup;

• Wireless iPhone charging;

• Using demanding applications – mobile games with advanced graphics or apps that heavily use the processing power of the processor;

• High-quality video streaming.

Apple advises that if the phone does not display any unusual messages, we can safely continue our activities without worrying about the device.

Overheated iPhone – power freezes and dark display

There are also cases in which we may unnecessarily expose our smartphone to high temperatures. The manufacturer advises to avoid this and lists some typical situations that we should avoid.

The company singles out leaving them in a car as particularly harmful to devices, as vehicles can get very hot in the summer. A longer stay in such conditions is therefore highly inadvisable. The same applies to direct exposure to sunlight, especially for many hours. Therefore, we should not, among other things, leave your iPhone on the windowsill.

Furthermore, normal heating from activity may be aggravated by the surroundings or the above situations. Playing smartphone-heating games in an already warm room or using GPS navigation for many hours on a sunny car dashboard may lead to overheating of the system.

In such situations, automatic overheating protection systems may be activated. As Apple reminds, users may notice, among others:

• slowing down or stopping charging – both wired and wireless;

• dimming the display or turning it off completely;

• weak cellular signal (caused by radios going into low power mode);

• turning off the camera flash function;

• slowdown in applications and games.

What to do when your iPhone overheats

If your phone gets too hot, it may also start showing a warning notification saying “Temperature. iPhone needs to cool down before you can start using it.” Afterwards, the screen will turn off, although, among other things, navigation will continue to provide audio route information. The iCloud backup process may pause until the iPhone cools down, but even a hot iPhone should offer the option to make emergency calls in most cases.

Apple advises that in cases of system overheating, turn off your phone and remove the device from the hot environment as soon as possible. This response should allow us to start using the iPhone again soon. However, if this message returns regularly and even during normal use, it is possible that we should go to an authorized Apple service center.
