It is used in the manufacture of pans. Is the toxic compound C8 a threat?

The C8 compound is eagerly used by the chemical industry due to its numerous properties. However, it is toxic and causes disease in humans. Can its use be safe? We asked an expert who had contact with the pure form of C8 many times.

It is toxic, carcinogenic, destructive to the environment, accumulates in the body, damages fetuses and never breaks down. C8, i.e. one of the perfluorinated acids, is used in the production of materials such as Teflon, waterproof membranes in clothes and rain shoes, as well as in extinguishing agents and fire-fighting foams. C8 has been used since the middle of the last century, and its harmful properties have been known for over 20 years.

In 2019, the film Dark Waters told the story of lawyer Robert Bilott, who in 1999 sued his former employer, DuPont, for knowingly dumping chemical waste from a factory in West Virginia. Lately there has been a lot of talk about C8, also known as PFOA. Last week, American comedian John Oliver recalled the case on the show “Last Week Tonight”.

Are we also exposed to this toxic substance in Poland? Yes and no.
