Legia Warszawa was placed in the “group of death”. A difficult autumn in European cups
On Thursday late in the evening, Legia Warszawa players will play against FC Midtjylland for a pass to the group stage of the European Conference League. However, on Friday, the country’s runners-up met their flu rivals. Legia will play in the fall against: AZ Alkmaar, Aston Villa and HSK Zrinjski Mostar.
The Polish runners-up defeated Danish FC Midtjylland in the last round of qualifying for the group stage of the European Conference League only after a series of penalties. Legia Warszawa players won 6:5, and the key save was made by goalkeeper Kacper Tobiasz. Thanks to this, the Legionnaires will have the opportunity to compete in European cups in the fall.

It is worth recalling that the LKE final in the 2023/24 season will take place in Athens, the exact name of the facility is OPAP Arena, where AEK Athens plays its matches on a daily basis. The Legionnaires were drawn from the third basket. For this reason, it was known that the Polish runners-up would avoid, among others, the defeaters of Pogoń Szczecin and Lech Poznań in the qualifying rounds, i.e. Belgian Gent and Slovak Spartak Trnava, respectively. Additionally, in the basket with the Polish team were Ukrainian Zorya Luhansk, Kazakhstan FK Astana, Turkish Besiktas, Finnish HJK and Slovenian Olimpia Ljubljana.
The draw was not kind to the residents of Warsaw. Legia faced: the Dutch AZ Alkmaar, the English Aston Villa and the Bosnian HSK Zrinjski Mostar. This will be Group E, which is demanding for UEFA’s number three competition.
Will Warsaw’s team repeat Lech Poznań’s success?
Let us remind you that Legia is the only Polish club in the LKE group stage. In the previous edition, Lech Poznań reached the quarterfinals of this competition. Ultimately, the former national champions were eliminated by Fiorentina. The Italians eventually played in the final, losing 1:2. The title was won by England’s West Ham United.
It is worth adding that in the group stage of the Europa League, the second most important product of UEFA, we will be represented by Raków Częstochowa. The Polish champions were eliminated from the Champions League in the final stages, but they will gain further European experience in the immediate ranks of the elite. The Częstochowa team was placed in a group with the Austrian Sturm Graz, the Portuguese Sporting Lisbon and the Italian Atalanta Bergamo.
