Piołunówka is prepared from the dried herb of wormwood (Herba Absinthii). The plant blooms from July to September and, as herbalists indicate, then it is best to collect it for tincture. It is prepared from all parts of the plant. In Poland, wild wormwood can be found in forest glades, meadows and wastelands, in dry, sunny places. Ready dried plant is also available in herbal shops. Absinthe is also prepared on the basis of wormwood, which in the 19th century was the favorite drink of artists. Psychoactive effects were attributed to him, which was the cause of numerous controversies. It happens that absinthe is confused with piołunówka, but you have to remember that they are not the same liquors. In 2019, Piołunówka, also known as lightning, was entered on the list of traditional products in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship.

Pro-health effect of wormwood

For centuries, wormwood herb has been used in natural medicine. The tannins, flavonoids and essential oils contained in it have a bactericidal and anti-parasitic effect (cleansing the digestive tract from pinworms, nematodes and human roundworm). It should be added, however, that studies confirming these properties have so far been carried out only on animals. They were described in the “Journal of Helminthology”.

Wormwood tincture aids digestion, treats indigestion, prevents constipation and relieves flatulence. It also speeds up the metabolism. It is also used for food poisoning. It is also credited with strengthening immunity and antispasmodic, which is helpful in the case of menstrual pain. It is also helpful in the case of painful menstruation, because it acts diastolic, it also regulates the menstrual cycle in women. The tincture has a strong anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and antipyretic effect, thanks to which it supports the treatment of upper respiratory tract infections and supports the body’s immunity.

Piołunówka medicinally, is recommended in an amount of not more than a tablespoon a day, for no longer than two weeks.

Note: Drinking wormwood is contraindicated for children and pregnant women, people with epilepsy, kidney and heart diseases.
