Since October 8, 2023, Piotr Zieliński has not scored a single goal or assist for SSC Napoli. This is a terrifying end to the history of Poles in Naples.
Piotr Zieliński has been playing in the senior team on the Italian Peninsula since 2012. His first club was Udinese Calcio. Then a loan to Empoli, and finally, from the 2016/17 season, he became a player of SSC Napoli. It was in Naples that the Polish midfielder broke out into the open, becoming one of the most valuable second-line players in Serie A.

In January this year, the immediate future of the Polish midfielder was finally clarified. Zieliński says goodbye to Napoli, and his new club will most likely be Inter. The club from Milan has been interested in Zieliński for a long time. The Pole will therefore go from being the current Italian champion to most likely… the future winner of the most valuable trophy on the Apennine Peninsula.
Zieliński will go to Milan on a free transfer, after previously not extending his contract with Napoli. The saga regarding the future of the Polish midfielder in Naples has been going on for several years. When it seemed that Zieliński might stay at Napoli until the end of his career, the greatest success – the aforementioned title in the 2022/23 season – turned out to be a curse. Aurelio De Laurentiis, the eccentric owner of the club, once again tried to get something out of the Pole’s contract, which ultimately ruined the talks about a common future in the perspective of the next seasons.
Appalling statistics of the former captain of the Polish national team
It is surprising how badly Zieliński has been playing in recent months. The captain of the national team, in the absence of Robert Lewandowski, has not recorded a goal or an assist in an official Napoli match since… October 8 last year. The goal by the Pole was scored in a match against Real Madrid in the Champions League, which we ultimately lost 2-3.
Since then, Zieliński has recorded only two assists, but in the colors of the national team. These were key plays in the matches against the Faroe Islands (2:0) and Moldova (1:1). As you can see, the contract turmoil and talks about the future have made Zieliński lose his tone. At least that’s what the merciless statistics show.
