The Ministry of Family, Labor and Social Policy wants to extend parental leave for parents of premature babies. Such babies spend the first weeks of their lives in the hospital.

The Ministry of Family, Labor and Social Policy is working on regulations that will extend parental leave for parents of children born prematurely and hospitalized after delivery.

Longer parental leave for parents of premature babies

The “week for week” principle will apply, i.e. a week of additional leave for a week of the child's stay in the hospital. In total, this could extend parental leave by up to eight weeks, Business Insider has learned.

Even more will be due to parents of extremely premature babies, i.e. children born before the 28th week of pregnancy or weighing less than 1,000 g.

Additional maternity leave is to be paid 100%. Each parent will be able to use it. Minister Agnieszka Dziemianowicz-Bąk is to present details of the proposal in the coming days.

Maternity benefit – the most important information

Maternity benefit is available to every woman who has given birth to a child and pays sickness insurance contributions, i.e. is employed under an employment contract, mandate contract or runs a sole proprietorship. It can be paid in two ways: 81.5 percent of the benefit for the whole year or 100 percent of the benefit for the first 20 weeks and then 70 percent for the next 32 weeks.

Each mother can decide for herself whether she decides to receive the benefit of 81.5 percent for the whole year or 100 percent and 70 percent for the following weeks.

Maternity benefit after termination of employment

If the mother is employed under an employment contract and the contract is of a specific nature and expires during maternity leave, she does not have to worry about the payment of benefits. In such a situation, she will receive it from the Social Insurance Institution and will receive the money until the child is 52 weeks old.

To receive maternity benefit from ZUS, you must download the ZUS ZAM document. The application must be completed in capital letters and include your details and your child's details. When the child turns 1 year old, the right to receive maternity benefit expires.
