Gertruda Uścińska – biography

Prof. Gertruda Uścińska has been the president of ZUS since February 2016. Previously, she had not held any political functions, so when the then Minister of Family Elżbieta Rafalska announced Uścińska’s appointment to the position, journalists, even those related to social security, did not immediately recognize the name of the new president.

Uścińska did not perceive lack of experience as an obstacle, quite the opposite. She emphasized that in other European countries, insurance experts have recently been appointed to be presidents of institutions in this field. She added that she would cope because she had experience in leading teams on numerous scientific projects in Poland and abroad.

Prof. Uścińska graduated in law from the University of Silesia in 1981, in 1987 she defended her doctorate at the Institute of Labor and Social Affairs in Warsaw, and in 2006 she obtained her habilitation at the University of Warsaw. In 2015, she received the title of professor of social sciences, and in February 2016 she became the president of ZUS. He specializes in foreign social security systems.
