The Polish national team won the European Championship for the second time in history. In the grand final held in Rome, the White and Reds did not give the hosts a chance, defeating them 3-0. After the match, all Poles had reasons to be proud. In addition to the medal, Wilfredo Leon takes home the award for the best volleyball player of the tournament.
Polish volleyball players gave fans another reason to celebrate. After their success in the Nations League, they followed in the footsteps of the Turkish women’s team and, like them, added a triumph in the European Championship to the VNL. Nikola Grbic’s players defeated the defending champions and tournament hosts, the Italians, in great style in Rome. After the 3-0 victory, everyone could rejoice until dawn. Wilfredo Leon will return to the country with the award for the MVP of the European Championship.
Wilfredo Leon is the best player of the European Championship
Wilfredo Leon recorded phenomenal performances in the Old Continent championship. The Polish representative from Cuba was the driving force behind Nikola Grbic’s team, which defeated its rivals in the group stage, and then defeated Belgium, Serbia, Slovenia (all three teams 3:1), and in the final to zero against Italy. In it, the 30-year-old was the most effective player of the match (together with Daniele Lavia), scoring 13 points.
Even before the official medal ceremony took place, representatives of the European federation presented the MVP award to Leon. Although there were many candidates for the award in the Polish team, it was awarded to the recipient. Interestingly, among women, just over two weeks ago, the same award was received by Melissa Vargas, a representative of Turkey from Cuba. Unlike, for example, VNL, the organizers did not create a “Dream Team”. Internet users will decide who will be included. After the match, Leon did not hide that the success was due to hard work and God.
– I thank God for this medal. Only he knows how hard I worked. We are returning to Poland with gold. I would also like to thank the fans and remember that there is one more tournament ahead of us. Continue to support us, said Leon after the match, quoted by Przegląd Sportowy Onet.
Poles will fight for the Olympic Games
Poles will return to the country on Sunday. There they will be officially welcomed at Chopin Airport. They won’t get too long a break, because they will soon start competing in the last tournament of the season – competing for tickets to the Olympic Games.
